Where the Wild Things Are

AHHHHHHHHHH!! YEZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!

LN LU

Look at your shoes, create a genre

Shoegazing is a sub-genre of alternative rock that uses distortion, fuzzbox, droned guitar riffs, and ethereal vocals. The genre got its name because the musicians in these bands maintained a motionless persona during live performances - they stood on stage and stared at their effect pedals or the floor, hence the idea that they were gazing at their shoes. The shoegazing sound is typified by significant use of guitar effects, and indistinguishable vocal melodies that blended into the creative noise of the guitars.

Examples of shoe-gazing bands/musicians: M83, Sigur Rós, Blur, The Verve, Van She, School of Seven Bells, etc.

Somtimes I go whole days
listening bored, half asleep
I won't say anything
that's worth a thing to me
One day, suddenly, time
took a turn that once felt so brief
I blinked to see polite ghosts fading quickly

What begins as an unguarded
train of thoughts slowly can become
an addiction to the slumber
of disconnection and the resonance
of memory that no longer has a shape
but keeps you numb through
the hours till gone is another day

Be aware, my darling
these things I say I mean
are just traces of something
I long to feel again
I see our time expand
in the air almost forcibly,
spreading thinner till it dissolves completely

The music itself speaks volumes, but the words to this song are astounding. In my opinion, the song is about a person's inability to overcome the apathy and lethargy that has become a routine in their life. They reflect back on weeks, months and years wasted on being uninspired and unproductive because of their numbness, and can't help but wish for some sort of inspiration to wake them up from their apathy so they can feel again as they used to.

Breezy Beezy

A beach trip is not complete unless it includes 3 girls riding in a Mustang convertible with the top down, and a surfboard in the back-seat. I have discovered that one of the most liberating feelings anyone can ever experience is riding in a convertible on a freeway with the wind swooshing your hair to and fro. Although the same 4 songs were being played on every radio station as we drove, there is nothing more exciting and exhilarating than riding in a convertible to the beach with your best friends, not to mention the surfboard that was strapped in next to me.

Almost equally as exciting, but not quite, is illegally squishing 6 people into a 5 seater Honda Civic with half of the people in the car high (excluding me and the driver - Aurora) while coastin' around Hollywood at 12AM. Taco Tuesday should become a tradition. It's so satisfying to pull up to a local Del Taco and order 45 tacos, and only having to pay $15. Too bad all the high beezys got the muchies and ate all the goods. Around 2AM, everyone was knocking out, and Taco Tuesday came to a wrap.

The only thing that can top these 2 car/transportation experiences would be this:

High in Hollywood

Recap on Spring Break so far:

Saturday: Had an adventurous night with Tripod. Too many places, too little time. I love my anchors.
Sunday: Chilled with the homies like it was 1998.
Monday: Home-body for the day.
Tuesday: Islands for burgers; Crazy night with the beezys from Glendale. 4 high bitches and 2 clean goodie-two shoes (me) roaming around Hollyhood in a 5 seater with cops at every corner.

I'm kicking myself for not going to the An Horse/Wintersleep show at the Echoplex. I didn't know Claire would know them. FUCK. Too good of a show to miss.

transient

I had another talk with my mum, more of a reflection than a conversation. We talked about my childhood, and an interesting fact that she brought up was the fact that I have never stayed with the same group of friends for over 2 years. Since kindergarten, I've changed my group of friends more than I can count on my 2 hands. Sometimes the group would just be an assimilation of two groups, or an entire change. After extensively thinking about it, I hope this isn't a reflection on my future and a sign of commitment issues. Fuck, there are some serious things I need to clean up in my life.

ERIPSNIINSPIRE

I wonder if I've ever inspired someone to be better than they are. I wonder if I've ever made someone realize that they shouldn't settle for less than they're worth. I wonder if I've ever changed someone's life. I wonder if I've ever saved someone. I hope out there in this city, county, state, country, world and universe is someone that I've changed.

Are you an inspirer, or an inspired?
I love afternoons where I recoil into my own autonomous world. Sipping coffee and reading a novel under the sun.

Bubble Balloons

Water's slower than you'd think; in that tiny instant after a pop, the tensed balloon retracts much faster than liquid H2O. The result? A split moment where water seems to defy the laws of physics. High speed photography doesn't get any better than this!

Passion Pit

Is excessive blogging unhealthy? I think not. It's 3 AM, I'm on my bed with sparse clothing on, sipping on a beer (kidding, or am I?) and looking up random stuff I've missed this past week due to finals.

Anyways, this week will be fun. Spring break. I can feel it.

Random Fact

Today my mum told me that when she was pregnant with me, the doctors has to induce her into labour, because my heart had stopped when I was in her belly. Scary to think that if things hadn't happened the way it did, that I could've been born with neurological problems...

On a lighter note, this song (below) is a must hear. The singer is Holly Miranda, the same girl who sang in the Elliott Smith's cover a couple posts down, and the song features Kyp Malone of TV on the Radio. Her entire album is produced by David Sitek, who is also of TVOTR. Her voice is amazing, and the composition of the song is superb. I am currently obsessing over this song, so take a listen and enjoy.

Hearing in Color

Sound → Color Synesthesia

This neurological phenomenon occurs when a stimulation of one sensory leads to an involuntary stimulation of another sensory. In sound → color synesthesia, individuals experience colors in response to tones or other aspects of sounds. There are two type of synesthesia in this category, which are called "narrow band" and "broad band" sound → color synesthesia. In narrow band sound → color synesthesia musical stimuli will elicit specific color experiences, such that a particular note will always elicit red, or harps will always elicit the experience of seeing a golden color. In broadband sound → color synesthesia, on the other hand, a variety of environmental sounds, like an alarm clock or a door closing, may also elicit visual experiences.

Color changes in response to different aspects of sound stimuli may involve more than just the hue of the color. Any dimension of color experience can vary. Brightness, saturation and hue may all be affected to varying degrees. Additionally, music → color synesthetes, unlike grapheme → color synesthetes, often report that the colors move, or stream into and out of their field of view. Like grapheme → color synesthesia, there is rarely agreement among music → color synesthetes that a given tone will be a certain color. However, when larger samples are studied, consistent trends can be found, such that higher pitched notes are experienced as being more brightly colored.

I have NEVER heard of this condition until I read that Ida Maria, a Norwegian artist, had this condition...I wonder what it is like to hear music and have an array of colors swim before your eyes. Hearing with your eyes...that sound fucking amazing...
[Edit] I just looked up 'visual music,' and apparently this is somewhat close to the experience they feel when they hear music...that's beyond words....

First rule of cool: Cool cannot accurately be observed at all, because the act of discovering cool causes cool to take flight.

Second rule of cool: Cool cannot be manufactured, only observed.

Third rule of cool: Cool can only be observed by those who are themselves cool.

Odd, contradictive, but kind of makes sense. The rule of thumb by DeeDee Gordon and Baysie Wightman, not me. I'm not cool enough to make up rules for being cool. Ha!

Something about airplanes...

Everytime I go to an airport, I feel like I'm witnessing something that cannot be described, something so intangible, yet so palpable. Maybe this is the work of my observative nature, but if you have ever people-watched (no creepiness) at an airport, you will know what I mean. There is something magical when people are reunited at the airport, like a moment of absolute happiness and pure love. The son and daughter returning home from college; the business man who has a business trip every 2 months; the traveller who seeks to explore the world, but cannot call anywhere else home but home itself; the grandparents flying in for their grand-daughter's wedding; the hopeless lover who travelled across the earth to chase the one he loves; the mother who had to leave her kids to care for her sick parents. When you reach the terminal, as you bend the last corner into sight, you are received by the people who love you the most. The ones that care enough to wait in the terminal as the digital board flashes 'delay;' the ones that love you enough to greet you with watery eyes and a smile; the ones that are excited enough to crowd around the railing to wait for you to turn the corner with your luggage in tow. Those are the people who love you the most, those are the people who will wait and anticipate for your arrival, those are the people who cannot contain their happiness when they see your face. So who will wait for you at the terminal when you get back?

Drink up baby and look at the stars

It's rare that I ever come across a cover that I particularly like, mainly beacuse I'm too attached to the original sound of a song, but once in a while, I get lucky enough to stumble across a cover that completely blows my mind away. These next two covers are probably the most breath-taking covers I've ever encountered.

This cover of Elliott Smith's song 'Between the Bars' is as good as the original, and when you're up there with Elliott Smith, you know you're doing something right. Their voices are raspy, raw and real (unintentional alliteration). Especially when Holly Miranda sings. Holy fuck. That is a voice that means serious business.

This next cover is by two sisters from Sweden called First Aid Kit, and they covered Fleet Foxes' 'Tiger Mountain Peasant Song,' and I speak for the public when I say that this cover ALMOST blows the original out of the water. Both of them have a spine-chilling voice that echos throughout the song. And do I even need to mention the harmonizing? It's like Simon and Garfunkel all over again.

Save Musicians, Buy Their Album

This is a bit late, considering the video came out a couple of days ago, but better late than never. Karen O never ceases to amaze me with her fierceness. All she does in this video is stride around San Francisco singing - simple - yet I can't help but wish I was in her shoes dancing on the street while singing to complete strangers.

These past few weeks, I've been blogging/talking about the Yeah Yeah Yeahs a lot, mainly because I'm so fucking excited for their album. Albeit, I already have the entire album on iTunes via leakage, which I feel guilty and at the same time grateful for, I still can't shake the thought of their album releasing in April, and of course, the release of tour dates!

In retrospect, a majority of my blog is dedicated to album leaks...Grizzly Bear, Metric, Yeah Yeah Yeahs...all of which are albums I've been eagerly anticipating for for 2009. I've always been skeptical about leaks. For instance, as a dedicated fan, does it make me less dedicated, or more dedicated if I succumb to leaks? Isn't my excitement and eagerness a sign of devotion? Or is my lack of will-power to wait till the release date an implication of my weakness? Needless to say , the bands that I devotely follow happen to be the bands that I find leaks for, only because I anticipate a new album and constantly check their website, and/or websites that follow them. Regardless of leaks, these are the bands that I will support without hesitation by pre-ordering their CDS, or by buying their pre-sale concert tickets.

This brings me to my next topic, which is sort of a continuation of my long-winded rant about leaks. Doesn't it suck to live in a generation where vinyls and CD's are practically obsolete? I never understood how people could find satisfaction in having only pirated, intangible mp3's on their laptops. Don't you want a hard copy album with a little picture booklet that has the lyrics to all the songs? Maybe only music enthusiast realize the beauty of walking into a record store and the novelty of having a hard copy album with a little booklet...

Anyways, I REALLY need to study now. So I'll just close this blog with another video. Enjoy.

Jilted

I'm looking for an excuse to not study...

Celibacy?

Today, a friend of mine (who will stay anonymous) confessed to me that she wanted to be preggers, and that she couldn't wait to push a baby out of her vagina. She then proceeded to tell me that she was going to stay celibate till marriage, and that she was going to substitute sex with masturbation. Jokingly, I told her I would buy her a cheap wooden dildo. Stupid of me to joke, because she then told me she prefered ones that wiggled. Gross. Gross. Gross. End of story.

On a happier note, here's a song!

Weird video, but good song. I'm still kicking myself for not seeing Shiny Toy Guns before Carah left. The new singer is just not the same. Oh well, at least Carah is starting her own band, which at point, is sounding pretty good!

Change

Don't get me wrong, I love change. When Obama was campaigning for change, I proudly stood by him advocating for change, but there comes a time when constant change is no longer a positive thing, it becomes a habit of inconsistency and uncertainty. And who/what is this angry diatribe directed towards? Facebook, of course. Within the span of 3-6 months, Facebook has managed to once again change its layout. Just as I was getting used to the 'new' Facebook, a 'newer' Facebook has to surface. Maybe I should just switch to Twitter. Haha. Nevermind. My social skills can only handle one social network at a time.

Procrastination + Apathy = ?

I am currently sitting in my room sipping on my Yoo-hoo, contemplating whether or not I should start on my Hum-core essay about Porgy and Bess (which I should've started last week considering finals are next week, and I won't have time to work on it then). I feel like I should be stressing out with all that is to come in the next week: 4 finals and 1 essay. Yet, I feel so numb, like I don't give a shit...but I do...Procrastination and apathy is probably the deadliest combination for a college student to experience, but I can't help but feel the side-effects of both at such a critical time! I feel royally screwd, but at the same time, the impact of the thought has yet to hit me. I need someone to come and slap me across the face to bring me back to reality..

Marshmellow cloud

Sometimes when the sky is filled with clouds, and not just flat gray clouds, but the white puffy clouds that look like marshmellows, and occasionally the sun's ray peeks through a hole in the sky and luminates a portion of the earth...doesn't that sight make you feel like there must be a God out there somewhere?

Who's going to watch over you?

Doctor Manhattan: Thermodynamic miracles... events with odds against so astronomical they're effectively impossible, like oxygen spontaneously becoming gold. I long to observe such a thing. And yet, in each human coupling, a thousand million sperm vie for a single egg. Multiply those odds by countless generations, against the odds of your ancestors being alive; meeting; siring this precise son; that exact daughter... Until your mother loves a man she has every reason to hate, and of that union, of the thousand million children competing for fertilization, it was you, only you, that emerged. To distill so specific a form from that chaos of improbability, like turning air to gold... that is the crowning unlikelihood. The thermodynamic miracle.

Laurie Juspeczyk: But... if me, my birth, if that's a thermodynamic miracle... I mean, you could say that about anybody in the world!

Dr. Manhattan: Yes. Anybody in the world... But the world is so full of people, so crowded with these miracles that they become commonplace and we forget... I forget. We gaze continually at the world and it grows dull in our perceptions. Yet seen from the another's vantage point. As if new, it may still take our breath away. Come... dry your eyes. For you are life, rarer than a quark and unpredictable beyond the dreams of Heisenberg; the clay in which the forces that shape all things leave their fingerprints most clearly. Dry your eyes... and let's go home.

Spring Chills

Recap of yesterday's (Thursday, March 6th) monumental event: For intramural basketball yesterday, my team - Hoopsters - played against the Yay team, which is by far our biggest competitors in the league, and my limbs were too fucking raw and limp to function properly due to the pointless 2 hour hall soccer game I had right before my basketball game. Let's first start with the soccer game. The game was suppose to start at 8, so our team naturally arrived a bit early to warm up. Normal. But the game before us was delayed due to overtime, and lucky us had to wait a little longer in the freezing ocean-side night. Not only was our game prolonged due to circumstances beyond our control, but once the game commenced, both the Cascada team and our team couldn't help but accuse one another of cheating. Took forever. Such a waste of 2+ hours...I don't even do anything when I play! I just go because our hall needs at least 3 girls on the field in order to play. I don't play soccer, I don't know how! By 9PM, all of my protruding body parts (including ears, nose, arms, legs, etc.) felt like they were going to fall off, so in the end, I didn't do anything except stand stoically in the middle of the field. The game ended at 10PM...and my basketball game was at 10:30PM. FML. Needless to say, my limbs were too raw, cold and numb to funtion properly for basketball, and I sucked shit. Oh, and did I mention I scored in the wrong basket giving the other team 2 points that my team could've used? Allegra's face was the first thing I saw after scoring that basket, and let me tell you, the look on her face was the epitome of grief, anguish and disgust. Hahaha. I felt like an idiot, and the huge crowd watching didn't make it any better. Anyways, we lost by 15+, meaning we didn't get free championship shirts, nor a photo up on the wall at the ARC...damn.

Guilty As Charged

Once again, I have succumbed to music leaks...and this time the victim to my impatience is Grizzly Bear's third debut album, Veckatimest. I am speechless. The album is above and beyond. The follow-up to their spectacular second album - Yellow House - definately does not disappoint. Their harmonizing almost rivals those of Fleet Foxes, and that says a lot. I've already pre-ordered the album, as well as Metric's Fantasies (which is equally as good) and I can't wait to recieve both! They've just released their summer tour line-up, and of course, they're playing a show at Wiltern in LA, and I just might HAVE TO go. Ha, of course I'm getting tickets.

At this point, I can't even say which individual track I love over the rest. They're all equally so eargasmic in their respective ways. I can't wait to see them live! Eck! Now I just have to find someone who wants to join me!

Mr. SKQ

I have come to a dramatic conclusion. If Sara Kiersten Quin was a boy, she would be the perfect man for me. Intelligent, funny, artistic, quirky, tasteful, genuine, stylish, innovative, composed and passionate. She's an introvert with extrovert qualities, she's a book worm, she's aware of global/national issues, she's passionate about her career, she's adament on her life choices, and she's almost fearless towards the public's view of her. And most of all, she makes godly music.

Eats, Shoots and Leaves

So I was re-reading my previous blog, and it is shamefully filled with various punctuation, spelling and grammar errors. Fuck, I think this is why I gave up blogging before. My OCD self will not allow any sort of error in my writing, and this requires me to re-read all my post in order to spot and correct any missed errors. Anyways, my blog title is in reference to a famous book about how so many writing rules are now so loosely applied, and it is called...Eats, Shoots and Leave: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation. Genius. An interesting fact about the book is that the title was derived from a joke which goes like this:

A panda walks into a café. He orders a sandwich, eats it, then draws a gun and proceeds to fire it at the other patrons.
'Why?' asks the confused, surviving waiter amidst the carnage, as the panda makes towards the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual, and tosses it over his shoulder.
'Well, I'm a panda', he says, at the door. 'Look it up.'
The waiter turns to the relevant entry in the manual and, sure enough, finds an explanation. 'Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves.'

With the incorrect use of punctuation, the entire meaning of the description has changed. The correct punctuation is 'Eats shoots and leaves," meaning pandas eat shoots and leaves, which are in essence, plants. However, because of poor punctuation, the connotation of the sentence is completely thrown off, and instead of pandas eating "plants," they eat, shoot (a gun) and leave (the room/restaurant). Interesting isn't it? Or not. Hahaha. I guess my inner nerd is seeking for a place to speak.

Creative Urges

Ok, so at about 5AM in the morning, I get this unnerving urge to start a blog so I can ramble about whatever is on my mind...That's a lie, I think it was more of a urge to post about current songs that I am listening to, than an urge to blog about random, inconspicuous moments that occured during my day. Nonetheless, here I am. I think in the span of my short lifetime, I've created about a dozen of these blogs. In the beginning I get excited about the prospect of blogging, but after two weeks - once I've completely forgotten my username and password - I move onto the next thing that excites me, which usually doesn't involve a blog, or a sense of writer's block. Moving on...this week the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' new record It's Blitz! leaked, and I have to admit that I am one of those guilty fans who cannot help but press the 'download now' icon and save. Needless to say, the album is amazzzing! So orgasmic to the ear that it deserves 3 z's. This album is definitely a move towards a more synth driven sound, and I love it! I have been listening to 'Hysteric' over and over again on my iTunes, and it's safe to say that the other songs are equally as listen-worthy. The album isn't due till later this year...like May?...but I highly recommend people to buy it (yes, buy it...as in the actually CD, not the mp3!) and give it a good listen. Now, I'm off to work. We're putting on Wall-E today at the MPR to promote being green. I'm setting up, but bouncing at 5 for IM soccer playoffs! I am one of the lucky girls that gets to play, which basically consists of me standing on the field, while the boys work hard at ensuring our spot in the finals. Haha, maybe I should've chosen soccer over basketball...nahhh noiiiii nope
